Foundation Hotel Detroit
When it came time to transform the historic Detroit Fire Department Headquarters into the Foundation Hotel, Great Lakes Essential Power was up to the task. This $28 Million dollar project opened for business in May 2017 featuring 100+ boutique rooms and world class restaurant, Apparatus Room. Powered by GE Industrial Solutions Electrical Distribution equipment, this world class hotel is now enjoyed by visitors from all over the globe.
Retrofitting a 100 year old building on one of the busiest Detroit street corners was no easy task. Having to utilize a tight footprint with existing underground Detroit Edison vaults, every square foot became important in the transformation of this building. In addition, many aspects of the existing Detroit Fire Department Headquarters needed to be preserved and updated to reflect an upbeat, boutique vibe in a rugged urban environment.
Our Custom Solution
Original project scope required 3000A Switchboard construction at custom 78” height with side entry into service entrance equipment. A busway run would also exit out the side of the main switchboard and into another piece of electrical distribution equipment downstream. In addition to this, the main breaker needed to be equipped with an arch flash reduction system (RELT -Reduced Energy Let Through) to mitigate potential arch flash if it were to occur. Customer metering was also provided on the main switchboard for data collection. The GLEP team worked with the winning electrical contractor to value engineer the equipment into a workable, cost effective solution. The project was delivered on time, under budget and lead to successful opening of this prestigious new boutique hotel in Detroit, Michigan.
